Look #1 - Pennywise from 'IT'

Images courtesy of WCIU Chicago. Make Up First® created these looks using Mehron products. These looks were created by Make Up First® Instructors, Karla Arias and Rachael Heimbuch. Shop all Mehron products here.

Look #2 - Mermaid

Go glam or gory with this look. Add texture with FIRST® by Make Up First (Maqpro) loose pigments. To create a hook wound, use liquid latex, Mehron 3D gel, and spirit gum to create a raised texture.  Add cream paint and stage blood and voila!

Look #3 - Half Skeleton/ Half Melting Face

Look #4 - Sparkling Skeleton

Want more glitz? Dress up your skull with glitter and gems.  *Use eyelash glue to adhere your gems. Callas Lash glue is latex-free and has a wand/brush applicator for easy use! Recreate the illusion of summer-kissed skin with the Kevyn Aucoin Celestial Bronzing VeilThis versatile bronzing powder contains two sections; in one section, the gold and copper micro-milled crystal pigments highlight; in the other, the warm matte bronzer sculpts and defines, as well as further provides a golden, flawless finish.

ROY WOOLEY RE-CAP!

Make Up First® was thrilled to host Roy Wooley for a 5th year in a row!! Our students did an incredible job creating creatures, ghouls, and more!

Screen Shot 2017-10-05 at 3.42.39 PM.png

More about Roy:

Roy Wooley began his journey into the world of movie monsters after seeing “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes” at a very young age.  After being inspired, every Halloween was spent improvising costumes to create his favorite monsters. The rest of the time was spent drawing and airbrushing pictures of monsters.  In 2012 Roy appeared as a contestant on Syfy’s number one reality show “Face Off” where he received the title “King of Fabrication” after creating some of season 3’s most memorable creations. In 2013 Roy returned to “Face Off” for season 5 “Vets vs Rookies” where he made it to the “Final Three”.  Today when Roy is not working on set he continues making masks, prosthetics and props for the haunted house industry, instructing others who have the desire to make monsters at conventions and workshops, creating make-ups for low budget films, building custom props and costumes, and airbrush body art for fashion shows, parties and print.  We are proud to include Roy Wooley as one of our instructors at Make Up First® School of Makeup Artistry, Chicago's ultimate makeup artistry Vocational School!

MINI MONDAY WORKSHOP SERIES: CHARACTER MAKEUP

MONDAY, OCTOBER 9TH @ 10AM - 12PM

THEATRICAL MAKEUP: PRODUCT BREAKDOWN

Types of Theatrical Makeup:

CREAM-BASED: Cream makeup is usually made with mineral oil, and sometimes referred to as "grease-paints" for their texture and finish.  These products are ideal for long-wear.  Try Mehron's Blend™ Stick Makeup.  It is a highly pigmented, refined cream makeup in a convenient ultra-portable stick.  The sticks offer a full coverage creamy formula developed to withstand the utmost in extreme performance conditions including Broadway’s hot stage lights.  *When working with cream-based products, you must set your creams with powder, such as Mehron Colorset Powder, available here

WATER-BASED: Water-based makeup is an oil-free product that needs to be mixed with water to activate, generally with a sponge or brush.  When using this product, you have to treat it like a water-color paint. The more water you use, the more sheer the product becomes, whereas the less water, the more opaque. Try Mehron's Paradise Makeup AQ™, a semi-soft, vitamin enriched water- activated makeup that provides incredible color depth and controlled coverage.

POWDER-BASED:  Powder-based makeup can also be referred to as, "Cake" or "Pancake" makeup, which is a highly-pigmented, pressed powder that can be used either wet or dry.  Powder-based makeup transforms imagination into reality.   The full coverage formula will withstand the utmost in extreme performance conditions.  Mehron StarBlend™ is available here.

ALCOHOL- BASED: In order to work, Alcohol-based makeup must be activated by 99% alcohol. Similar to water-based makeup, you can sheer your product out, or use less alcohol to create a more opaque finish.  TEMPTU Dura Pro Palettes are triple poured with Temptu’s Dura liquid formula, an industry favorite for body art, prosthetics, and special effects makeup for over 25 years. Developed to withstand even the most extreme conditions, these concentrated pigments are ideal for creating a variety of effects.

WAX-BASED: For a hypo-allergenic option, wax-based creams are buildable, versatile and long-wearing.  Try our Limited Edition FIRST By Make Up First® (MAQPRO) Theatrical Fantasy Palette! It is perfect for creating multiple looks from glam to gastly.  Since the Fantasy Palette is wax-based, it works well with all other FIRST by Make Up First® wax Palettes.  We recommend using the FIRST by Make Up First® The Mixer, a four-in-one product:  The Mixer, which also contains wax, is a primer, moisturizer, cleanser and the best product to sheer the wax palettes to a desired intensity.

At Make Up First® School, we strive to deliver the best education possible; the students are well-prepared to pursue makeup artistry as a viable career.  In addition to the basic makeup courses, the School ensures that the students are well-educated in hygiene and sanitation. Students are taught by qualified, working artists, from Chicago, the advanced students/attendees  are able to meet and study with important artists and photographers from New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, and beyond. By attending the School Make Up First® students are not only highly trained, but are more likely than not, to find success in this highly competitive industry.

MAKE UP FIRST® FAQ'S

HOW MANY CLASSES DO I NEED TO TAKE TO GET CERTIFIED? WHAT DOES THE CERTIFICATION MEAN?

There are 8 courses that are State-Required: Basic I; Basic II; Media- HD; Media- Runway, Editorial, and Fashion; Theatrical Makeup A; Theatrical Makeup B; Clinical Makeup; and Careers In Makeup Artistry.   The State has also approved our Advanced Certificate Program, which is well-suited for the more experienced makeup artist.   The Certifications represent that the artist has been successfully trained by a vocational school, approved by the Illinois Department of Higher Education.

HOW LONG ARE YOUR COURSES? WHAT IF I CAN'T TAKE THE COURSES CONSECUTIVELY?

Courses are 1-2 weeks long, Monday-Thursday, and are typically offered morning, afternoon, and evening.  Students may elect to take the 8 courses either within one session, or over several sessions, within a  2 year period. Download the consumer disclosure information here.

DO I NEED TO GO TO A COSMETOLOGY SCHOOL OR ESTHETICS SCHOOL BEFORE ENROLLING AT MAKE UP FIRST ® SCHOOL?

No!  This is a common misunderstanding!  Other than to work in a salon or medi-spa setting, there is no requirement that makeup artists in Illinois (and most other states) be licensed. There is no prerequisite for enrollment at the School, other than that the student be at least 18 years or older and have a high-school diploma or GED equivalent.  In addition, Make Up First® is an approved sponsor under the IL Barber Act; most of the School's courses and workshops (open to the public) are eligible for CE hours. Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation

DO YOU OFFER JOB PLACEMENT?

In the Careers Course, we provide necessary information and guidance for starting a career in makeup artistry. Students continue to network with the makeup artist community by staying connected with Make Up First®.  Temporary, as well as permanent jobs, are received by the School and offered to the graduates through our agency, Artists by Make Up First, LLC.

WHAT OTHER COURSES AND WORKSHOPS DO YOU OFFER?

In addition to the Certification Program, we also offer many workshops, all of which are open to the public:   Airbrush MakeupBridal MakeupAdvanced Media Makeup; Advanced Theatrical Makeup; Special Effects; Basic and Advanced Hairstyling for Makeup Artists;  and Introduction to Wig making. The School also offers a "Mini Monday" workshop each month as well as other special events,  posted on the website as well as our social media.   Download the Consumer Disclosure Information here.

IS THERE A MAKEUP KIT?

There is a  Makeup Kit; the Kit is required for use in the Certification Program.  Make Up First® is both a M.A.C. Pro Student Discount eligible School, as well as a Make Up For Ever Pro Student Discount eligible School.   Student discount paperwork, for both companies, is provided to the student upon registration.

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? ENROOL NOW!

Our next Certification Program begins September 5th!

BACK TO SCHOOL -- SO SOON?!

School IS ALMOST BACK IN SESSION! WE'VE GOT YOU COVERED WITH MAKEUP 101.

Your eyes may feel strained from your studies.  For eyes, it is important to moisturize and hydrate. Prime and color correct your dark circles before you apply concealer and foundation.  Don't forget to set your under-eye cream products with powder!

You can still look glam while you study. While we LOVE liquid lipsticks for their longevity don’t let the matte lip trend leave your lips dry! Prep your lips with a lip scrub and follow with rosebud to keep lips smooth and hydrated.

Need a boost?  Instead of caffeine, reach for an instant refresher with the Cinema Secrets Moisture Spray.  It's formulated to lock in moisture with glycerin and sodium PCA, while aloe vera and green leaf calm and soothe, improving the skin's overall appearance. This mist brings an immediate surge of moisture and glow to your skin!

Finally, make sure to cleanse your skin every night to rid your face of makeup and debris!  We recommend a treatment cream rich in vitamin E to help prevent wrinkles.  Fragile skin around the eyes and lips are reinforced, firmed, toned and elastin is built up once again. Fine lines are erased and deeper wrinkles are diminished. *Not just for mature skin! Don't forget to use treatment masks; the MustaeV Joy Mask contains soothing extracts that evens the skin tone and improve the overall clarity.  Supercharged with a brightening solution to help alleviate and improve the appearance of dark spots and freckles. Use once or twice a week!

We want you!

Our Fall Certification Program Starts Soon! Basic I starts September 5th! What are you waiting for?

No-Sweat Summer Makeup: Melt-free makeup strategies for warm, humid weather

How to keep your makeup intact?  There are a few tricks that pro makeup artists use to ensure long-lasting makeup even under the most extreme temperatures.

Step one, use a mattifying product to prevent the skin from looking shiny.  Add an oil-free moisturizer and SPF.  Make sure to use a primer before applying your foundation.  For oil-prone skin, try this one.  If you have normal or dry skin, use a regular silicon primer. For your daily foundation, try a light, silicone-based foundation; silicone is melt-proof and water resistant.  Since the silicone makeup won’t move, the face will not require any set powder, and the skin will retain its dewy glow.

As for the eye makeup, we all know about waterproof mascaras.  However, now waterproof eyeliners are available as well; several liner pencils contain a silicone-derivative so that the liner won’t fade.

AMC Gel Eyeliner will not fade, it's perfect for hot summer days and nights! Available HERE

If there is makeup added to the eyebrows, make sure to use a cream based product rather than powder; such as Anastasia Dipbrow.

An alcohol-based setting liquid should be lightly applied over the brow makeup to ensure longevity.

    Setting Spray

For the lips, a lip pencil that contains a silicone-derivative, as well as a highly pigmented lip product will ensure that the lips will stay intact throughout the hot day.
