Y2K IS BACK

If you’ve opened TikTok or Instagram lately, you already know Y2K beauty is back. And not in a subtle way. We’re talking high-shine lips, icy lids, skinny brows (controversial, I know). People are loving that “just stepped out of a popstar music video” look. The early 2000s were all about experimentation, and this revival is bringing that same excitement back to the makeup industry. ✨

Let’s break down the trends making the biggest comeback.. and how to wear them now.

Gloss

Nothing screams Y2K like a juicy, high-shine lip. Shimmery or not, it was all about clear or pink tube gloss layered over a slightly darker lip liner around the outer edges (an evolved version of the iconic 90s trend lip liner trend).

How to wear it now:

Pair a glassy gloss with softly defined lips instead of harsh liner. Think hydrated, pillowy, and effortless rather than overly outlined.

Frosted Icy Eyes

Icy blue, silver, lavender - if it looked like it belonged in a snow globe, it was on your eyelids. Frosted shadows were a staple, often paired with thin eyeliner and LOTS of mascara.

Modernize it:

Swap chunky glitter frost for finely milled shimmer or glossy lids. Blend it out for a diffused wash rather than a packed, opaque finish.

Thin Brows

Yes.. thin brows have been making their return since 2022, when Lily James left us in awe with her transformation into Pamela Anderson in Pam & Tommy. Now, thin brows are becoming even more prominent in the beauty scene, with pop stars like Chappell Roan wearing pencil thin brows for many of her looks.

Body

Y2K wasn’t just about the face - collarbones, shoulders, and even legs were glowing. Shimmer powders and body oils were essentials.

How to wear it now:

Focus on strategic glow. Cream and liquid highlighters on the high points of the face, collarbone, shoulders and legs give that same luminous effect without looking overly glittery. Body makeup like Westmore Beauty is another option that not only gives the skin a flawless finish, but also gives the skin the bronzed glow that everyone wanted during the early 2000s.

Playful Color & Experimentation

The early 2000s had no rules. Bright liners, pastel shadows, rhinestones, and unexpected color combos were all in style.

Today’s take:

Keep the fun, lose the chaos. To make a y2k look actually wearable, choose one statement element - like a pop of color liner or a shimmery lid. Sometimes throwing everything on the face all at once isn’t the move. 😅

Why Y2K Makeup Works Right Now

Y2K beauty is more than nostalgia, it’s a reaction to years of ultra-minimal, “clean girl” aesthetics which - let’s be honest -  got kinda boring after a while. 😬 Y2K aesthetic invites personality back into makeup. It’s expressive and a lot more fun.

The best part about the Y2K revival is that you don’t have to follow it exactly as it was. Pick the elements you love, refine them with modern products and placement, and make them your own.
