More about Roy:

Roy Wooley began his journey into the world of movie monsters after seeing “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes” at a very young age.  After being inspired, every Halloween was spent improvising costumes to create his favorite monsters. The rest of the time was spent drawing and airbrushing pictures of monsters.  In 2012 Roy appeared as a contestant on Syfy’s number one reality show “Face Off” where he received the title “King of Fabrication” after creating some of season 3’s most memorable creations. In 2013 Roy returned to “Face Off” for season 5 “Vets vs Rookies” where he made it to the “Final Three”.  Today when Roy is not working on set he continues making masks, prosthetics and props for the haunted house industry, instructing others who have the desire to make monsters at conventions and workshops, creating make-ups for low budget films, building custom props and costumes, and airbrush body art for fashion shows, parties and print.  We are proud to include Roy Wooley as one of our instructors at Make Up First® School of Makeup Artistry, Chicago's ultimate makeup artistry Vocational School!

MAKE UP FIRST® FAQ'S

HOW MANY CLASSES DO I NEED TO TAKE TO GET CERTIFIED? WHAT DOES THE CERTIFICATION MEAN?

There are 8 courses that are State-Required: Basic I; Basic II; Media- HD; Media- Runway, Editorial, and Fashion; Theatrical Makeup A; Theatrical Makeup B; Clinical Makeup; and Careers In Makeup Artistry.   The State has also approved our Advanced Certificate Program, which is well-suited for the more experienced makeup artist.   The Certifications represent that the artist has been successfully trained by a vocational school, approved by the Illinois Department of Higher Education.

HOW LONG ARE YOUR COURSES? WHAT IF I CAN'T TAKE THE COURSES CONSECUTIVELY?

Courses are 1-2 weeks long, Monday-Thursday, and are typically offered morning, afternoon, and evening.  Students may elect to take the 8 courses either within one session, or over several sessions, within a  2 year period. Download the consumer disclosure information here.

DO I NEED TO GO TO A COSMETOLOGY SCHOOL OR ESTHETICS SCHOOL BEFORE ENROLLING AT MAKE UP FIRST ® SCHOOL?

No!  This is a common misunderstanding!  Other than to work in a salon or medi-spa setting, there is no requirement that makeup artists in Illinois (and most other states) be licensed. There is no prerequisite for enrollment at the School, other than that the student be at least 18 years or older and have a high-school diploma or GED equivalent.  In addition, Make Up First® is an approved sponsor under the IL Barber Act; most of the School's courses and workshops (open to the public) are eligible for CE hours. Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation

DO YOU OFFER JOB PLACEMENT?

In the Careers Course, we provide necessary information and guidance for starting a career in makeup artistry. Students continue to network with the makeup artist community by staying connected with Make Up First®.  Temporary, as well as permanent jobs, are received by the School and offered to the graduates through our agency, Artists by Make Up First, LLC.

WHAT OTHER COURSES AND WORKSHOPS DO YOU OFFER?

In addition to the Certification Program, we also offer many workshops, all of which are open to the public:   Airbrush MakeupBridal MakeupAdvanced Media Makeup; Advanced Theatrical Makeup; Special Effects; Basic and Advanced Hairstyling for Makeup Artists;  and Introduction to Wig making. The School also offers a "Mini Monday" workshop each month as well as other special events,  posted on the website as well as our social media.   Download the Consumer Disclosure Information here.

IS THERE A MAKEUP KIT?

There is a  Makeup Kit; the Kit is required for use in the Certification Program.  Make Up First® is both a M.A.C. Pro Student Discount eligible School, as well as a Make Up For Ever Pro Student Discount eligible School.   Student discount paperwork, for both companies, is provided to the student upon registration.

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? ENROOL NOW!

Our next Certification Program begins September 5th!

BACK TO SCHOOL -- SO SOON?!

School IS ALMOST BACK IN SESSION! WE'VE GOT YOU COVERED WITH MAKEUP 101.

Your eyes may feel strained from your studies.  For eyes, it is important to moisturize and hydrate. Prime and color correct your dark circles before you apply concealer and foundation.  Don't forget to set your under-eye cream products with powder!

You can still look glam while you study. While we LOVE liquid lipsticks for their longevity don’t let the matte lip trend leave your lips dry! Prep your lips with a lip scrub and follow with rosebud to keep lips smooth and hydrated.

Need a boost?  Instead of caffeine, reach for an instant refresher with the Cinema Secrets Moisture Spray.  It's formulated to lock in moisture with glycerin and sodium PCA, while aloe vera and green leaf calm and soothe, improving the skin's overall appearance. This mist brings an immediate surge of moisture and glow to your skin!

Finally, make sure to cleanse your skin every night to rid your face of makeup and debris!  We recommend a treatment cream rich in vitamin E to help prevent wrinkles.  Fragile skin around the eyes and lips are reinforced, firmed, toned and elastin is built up once again. Fine lines are erased and deeper wrinkles are diminished. *Not just for mature skin! Don't forget to use treatment masks; the MustaeV Joy Mask contains soothing extracts that evens the skin tone and improve the overall clarity.  Supercharged with a brightening solution to help alleviate and improve the appearance of dark spots and freckles. Use once or twice a week!

We want you!

Our Fall Certification Program Starts Soon! Basic I starts September 5th! What are you waiting for?

No-Sweat Summer Makeup: Melt-free makeup strategies for warm, humid weather

How to keep your makeup intact?  There are a few tricks that pro makeup artists use to ensure long-lasting makeup even under the most extreme temperatures.

Step one, use a mattifying product to prevent the skin from looking shiny.  Add an oil-free moisturizer and SPF.  Make sure to use a primer before applying your foundation.  For oil-prone skin, try this one.  If you have normal or dry skin, use a regular silicon primer. For your daily foundation, try a light, silicone-based foundation; silicone is melt-proof and water resistant.  Since the silicone makeup won’t move, the face will not require any set powder, and the skin will retain its dewy glow.

As for the eye makeup, we all know about waterproof mascaras.  However, now waterproof eyeliners are available as well; several liner pencils contain a silicone-derivative so that the liner won’t fade.

    INGLOT

AMC Gel Eyeliner will not fade, it's perfect for hot summer days and nights! Available HERE

If there is makeup added to the eyebrows, make sure to use a cream based product rather than powder; such as Anastasia Dipbrow.

An alcohol-based setting liquid should be lightly applied over the brow makeup to ensure longevity.

    Skindinavia

    Setting Spray

For the lips, a lip pencil that contains a silicone-derivative, as well as a highly pigmented lip product will ensure that the lips will stay intact throughout the hot day.

The Certificate Program, approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education, is a comprehensive, in-depth makeup artistry-training program.  By offering professional instruction in all areas of makeup artistry, we prepare the students to be able to accept work in all avenues of the industry, including editorial, bridal, theatrical, media, clinical and more.  In addition, the duration of the Program is specifically designed to allow the students to quickly launch their career.

    Q + A:

Q: Why should I choose Make Up First® School of Makeup Artistry?

A: The mission of the School is to ensure the best education possible so that the student will be best prepared to pursue makeup artistry as a viable career.  The School is nationally recognized as an excellent educational art program for makeup artists in Chicago. Students will not only gain experience in Chicago, but will be exposed to major artists from New York and LA. Students will also meet photographers and others successfully working in the industry throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.

Q: How much is your program?

A: The cost of the Basic Certification Program is $6900.00.  There is also an additional kit fee of $800, which is required for purchase. Each course may be taken individually, and each course may be individually paid for in full, on or before the first day of that course. Download the Consumer Disclosure Information here. Payment can be made, in person or online, HERE.

Q: What happens if I can't pay for every course offered in the program at once?

A: For some students, due to either time or financial constraints, the courses are taken over a period not to exceed two years-they are still able to start working even though their education is not completed.

Q: What makes your certificate different than other, shorter programs?

A: Other programs may advertise and offer a "certificate" give after within only one week, or sometimes even after only one day.    If the student is seeking a only a certificate,  they will just end up with a piece of paper, but will not be fully trained and highly employable.   Our program is so in-depth, that we include, among so many other subjects,  camouflage techniques for severe skin discolorations.  Students work on "real people", thereby better preparing them to confidently accept and be considered for any job in the industry.  The Certificate of Completion, via the State of Illinois and issued by the School, is just so much more than a piece of paper.

Q:  How do you help with job placement?

A:  In addition, we have an on-going relationship with our students/grads to ensure that they have a head start in the industry.  We have relationships with world-renowned makeup artists (who also come to the School and teach) and we actually have recruiters who come to the School to hire. Make Up First® also has an agency for current and former students. We post jobs on a regular basis, ranging from weddings, corporate shoots, production, and many more!

Q: Do you offer classes in Spanish?

A:  We do have a bilingual instructor that can assist with translation.

Q: What are the requirements to enroll?

A:  You do not need previous experience in makeup, or need to be a licensed cosmetologist or esthetician to attend.  The requirements are simple:  the student must be 18 or older and have graduated High School or received a GED, or equivalent. That's it!

*Upon Summer Basic I sign up, mention you saw this on the blog for a complementary pro product!
